#120 Paths and goals

#121 Paths shapes

The layout of paths will seem right and comfortable only when it is compatible with the process of walking. And the process of walking is far more subtle than one might imagine.

Complementaryproccesses:

-You can see the landscape for intermediate destinations. The furthest points along the path which you can see. You try to walk in a straight line and cut corners and take a diagonal pathm since these are the ones which often form straight lines between your present position and the point which you are making for.

-Cutting corners and getting somewhere the fastest.

-Furthest point keeps changing.

-Temporary goal which is more or less in the direction you want to tale and then walk in a straight line. Then changing, and when you get close pick a new goal.

-To lay down paths, first place goals at natural points of interest. Then connect the goals to one another to form the paths. The paths may be straight, or gently curving between goals; their paving should swell around the goal. The goals should never be more that a few hundred feet apart.

-Streets should be for staying in, and not just for moving through, the way they are today.

-make a buldge in the middle of the path, and make the ends narrower, so that the path forms an enclosure which is a place to stay, not just a place to pass through.

Why did I choose these patterns?

I chose to approach these two patterns as one. I chose these because I knew I wanted to have a flowing path going through my square. especially figuring out how to make it one coherent path that has a great flow. I also found it fascinating that there is indeed a phycological influence you can have when building a certain path and have it influence peoples behavior.

what is the value and what are the possibilities of this Pattern Language, how did you use it in your design?

Reflection

The value of these patterns is that it has a big influence on the experience someone has when visiting and walking through a place. Do the visitors have something to look at? Do they have to walk through grass because this will save them time? Do the paths take you everywhere you need to go? How do the paths fit in with its surroundings? There is a lot to think about and a lot you can reach with paths. There are endless possibilities. In my design I wanted to have a natural flowing path that reached every location on the square. first choosing where I wanted a location for example a terrace and then another location and then looking at how the paths were best shaped between these two. Making sure people were walking in a straight line and not losing time. Preventing them from straying from the path. Also keeping in mind where the paths pass and If I would like a path past my bench for example causing people to constantly pass me. I tried to keep the paths out of big green spaces. But when needed had no problem doing so because  after looking and learning about human behavior it is clear if it takes too much time to walk somewhere following a path people take shortcuts. And this will take from the experience of walking on a nice path. Also looking at the patterns"make a buldge in the middle of the path, and make the ends narrower, so that the path forms an enclosure which is a place to stay, not just a place to pass through." This you can see in the picture left. It is still a part of the path but it is not just a place to pass through, you could really sit here and relax. I made use of every single point I mentioned in the pattern intro on this page. I thought it was a very interesting and educational pattern that was very important for my design and tying everything together. But most importantly about peoples experience of the path.
