#60 accesable green

Why did I choose this pattern?

When reading about the pattern it says people need green open places to go to. When these are close by they are used. But if greens are more than 3 minutes away the distance overwhelms the need. I think he underestimated the need for being outdoors and seeing green. People would travel longer than three minutes to relax. There is a great need for parks in the city. There have also been countless researches done on mental and fysical health related to green in cities. With all of them saying green benefits humans of all ages. In a lot of different ways.

I chose this pattern because of how much it benefits people. Not only is it a nice place to relax and have fun on a piece of grass. It also has health benefits and can mean a lot to a person to spend some time outdoors. Looking at and being around trees and grass brings most people a comfortable feeling. And for those who do not wish to sit on it, they should be able to look out over it and be surrounded by green. I am interested in finding this balance.

Field research

Stadspark Grotekerkplein, Rotterdam

IMG_2645.JPG

Indautxu Square in Bilbao, Spain

It is avant-garde in style, surrounded by trees, benches and modern streetlights as well as featuring a big playground for children – the Indautxu Square ticks all the boxes for the successful multifunctional use of an urban space. I find it interesting how they placed the trees. And when the trees have lost their leaves there are still round patches of green across the square.

“The Park” in Las Vegas, USA

The Las Vegas Strip is famous for its unlimited entertainment offered. Since 2016, The Strip also has a  public space with  sustainable and contextual design. Corporate investors have created a dynamic place to meet up, eat out or hang out. Prolific shade structures help to temper the desert heat. Water features and desert plantings used as decor , and different seating options invite people to stay, connect and relax. Here I like how they really surrounded the spaces with trees and bushes that are from the surroundings, making a connection to where you are. Offering shade in warm weather.

The first lecture we got advice about making sure a square never look empty and adding benches would do this because when you see a square with empty benches the square looks extra empty and can be less inviting. Taking inspiration from seating with green. I came up with this design. a natural flow to every form and adding green. So people that choose not to enter the green fields can still enjoy green by sitting next to it.

I added a lot of green to my square and thought this was extremely important. Green is good for people and we need more in cities. plain open grasfields to be enjoyed however visitors seem fit. In the summer time drawing people onto the green field by having water shoot from the ground being especially attractive to young children in the city that need some cooling down.

For those who want calm and sun there is a big hill to visit and rest your head. Accesable by a path all the way up the hill. Or adventure spirits can just take the walk up the grass

Adding a different element of green. Flowers. On these flower hills one can enjoy a stroll along paths filled with flowers.

Reflection

There should be more green in every city. And I hope this will happen in the future. Especially because of how much is known for quite some time about how good it is for humans to be outside. Having acces to green and trees and nature close by is very important to a lot of people. It is need and it is used. As every grass field is full in the summer with people enjoying the sun laying or sitting on the grass. Or walking in a forrest. I used this pattern in a way it surrounds you everywhere. Not in the same amounts but it is there. There are big amounts of grass to relax on and the people who aren't sitting on the grass are looking at grass, flowers or trees. And almost every seating along the paths are built around trees. So when you look up there is a tree and your view is green.
